Daily Life as a Noble
Dear Journal,
Today at school my tutor, Lady Brunhild, announced to my class, which consists of myself and my sister Juliana, that our next assignment would be to work on our literary skills. I assumed that she was referring to handwriting and penmanship but, she said that those skills were proficient, and that we would begin to record our days in our journals. She handed us each a leather bound book filled with soft pieces of parchment and said that we were to write what had happened during our day, each night. So here I am writing about what happened during my day. To begin, let me give you some background information about me, I am 13 years old and my name is, Lady Arabella Billington of the Billington Manor. In my manor my family and I are nobles, which means we can enjoy the pleasures of a privileged life. For example, my family lives in a small castle near the center of the manor, although it is not nearly as large as the one that King Letholdus’s resides in, in my opinion it is quite nice, it does not seem like much in the eyes of a noble, but many of our serfs consider it grand. Like all manors where I live, we engage in feudalism. Feudalism is a social, political, and economic, system of exchanging land, for protection. For example, in exchange for loyalty, knights, and service, the king, King Dorian Letholdus, gives my family land and, in exchange for loyalty and military service, my family gives the knights that live on our manor, land. The feudal system is all I have ever known, so it is strange to think that their was ever a time when it did not exist, but, according to my older brother, Cassius, they did not used to have feudal systems and manors. Apparently feudalism all started when a great ruler named Charlemagne died and there was lots of disorder and chaos. There was no government to protect the people so, spotting a weakness the Vikings, a group of people from Sweden and Denmark, began to attack. We needed a system of government that provided protection and structure, and thus came the feudal system. My future job, is to be a noblewomen, may not sound like much to most people, but it actually it takes considerable skill. Noblewomen run the manor, when the men are at war, they keep track of the household accounts, and they control the storing of food and other much needed supplies used throughout the manor. As you can tell, my life is very privileged and does not require much physically demanding work and therefore I have quite an enjoyable life and I am very pleased with it. Now that some information about me has been affirmed I will tell you about my daily activities. First, I go to the daily mass ceremonies at the manor’s church. Next, I go to my classes with my tutor, Lady Brunhild where she teaches my sister and I how to be proper ladies and noblewomen. In Lady Brunhild’s class we learn how to sew, use proper etiquette, have eloquent literature and writing skills and run the manor. After that, I join my mother, Lady Eleanor Billington, in the kitchen where I learn how to cook and clean and do other household chores. When I am finished with my daily lessons and chores I am excused to do whatever I please. On most occasions I join either my siblings or my friend, Lady Christiana Montfront, in whichever activity they choose often times it is reading, sewing or embroidery. When the clock strikes 6:00 I return to my family’s home where we have dinner. And I write in this journal as I am doing now. Speaking of which, it is nearly time for bed, I should probably go to sleep. Goodnight!
Sincerely,
Lady Arabella Billington
